Cardiovascular Health

Heart attacks and strokes are one of the leading causes of death and disability. Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading single cause of death in the developed world. Between 15% and 20% of all hospital admissions are the direct results of CAD.

Some tests and screens can be arranged without seeing a doctor; however especially in patients with previous or existing medical conditions or uncertain symptoms, we recommend an initial consultation or short phone consultation* with one of our doctors first to determine which test/screen is most suitable for you.

For further information please contact +44 (0) 207 009 4650.
* 10 – 15 minute phone consultation charged at a fixed rate

Basic Cardiovascular Risk Screen

This screen is specifically designed to identify the key risk factors for cardiovascular disease.  It includes specific measurements such as Waist-to-Hip-ratio which is considered to be a more accurate predictor of cardiac issues than the more common BMI which is also measured.

It also includes a resting ECG, carbon monoxide testing for smokers and blood tests for diabetes, triglycerides, CRP and a detailed analysis of cholesterol levels and its sub-fractions (LDL, HDL, Apolipoprotein A & B).

This assessment lasts approximately 50 minutes during which a specifically assigned nurse will guide the patient through a variety of tests including body composition parameters, blood pressure and lung function test followed by a blood test.

The results will be interpreted by one of our doctors in conjunction with the information given by the patient in our comprehensive medical history and lifestyle questionnaire. The final health report will be sent to the patient within 10 working days.

For further information on the Basic Cardiovascular Risk Screen please contact our health screen advisers +44 (0)207 009 4650.

Comprehensive Heart & Arterial Screen

This is a more extensive assessment than the Basic Cardiovascular Risk Screen covering all the parameters in that screen as well as aiming to identify early signs of heart and arterial disease by means of an Exercise ECG and the more recently scientifically established non-invasive test for arterial health and predictor of heart and stroke health risk, known as the Arteriograph.

This assessment lasts approximately 60 minutes during which a specifically assigned nurse will guide the patient through a variety of tests including body composition parameters, blood pressure and carbon monoxide breath test followed by a blood test.

The results will be interpreted by one of our doctors in conjunction with the information given by the patient in our comprehensive medical history and lifestyle questionnaire. The final health report will be sent to the patient within 10 working days.

For further information on the Comprehensive Heart and Arterial Screen please contact our health screen advisers +44 (0)207 009 4650.

Advanced Heart & Arterial Screen

This is the most comprehensive non-invasive screen for heart and arterial health available today. It extends the level of investigation even further than the Comprehensive Heart and Arterial Screen by including more predictive markers in the blood like the latest advance a marker known as Lp-PLA2. This is thought to be one of the best predictors of potential arterial blockage as well as an ultra-sound test known as an ECHO Cardiogram. This allows us with non-harmful sound waves to view the function of the heart and measure the amount of blood ejected and the response of the arteries directly.

It also includes the Exercise ECG and possibly the most scientifically established pioneering non-invasive test for arterial health and predictor of heart and stroke health risk, known as the Arteriograph.

The Arteriograph measures the speed of a pulse wave down the main artery of the body, the Aorta, in a painless test requiring you simply to lie down for 10 minutes. It gives predictive results for small blood vessel disease as well as large vessel blockages and measures core blood pressure – more diagnostic than peripheral pressure measured around the upper arm.

This assessment lasts approximately 120min during which a specifically assigned nurse will guide the patient through a variety of tests including body composition parameters, blood pressure and carbon monoxide breath test followed by a blood test, Arteriograph, Echo cardiogram and Exercise ECG.The results will be interpreted by one of our doctors in conjunction with the information given by the patient in our comprehensive medical history and lifestyle questionnaire. The final health report will be sent to the patient within 10 working days.

Arteriograph

The Arteriograph is a well established, conventional test that has popularity in many medical centres around the world. The application of a blood pressure-type cuff to the arm and some data fed into a computer allows an understanding of several parameters regarding arterial health.

The Arteriograph can give an indication of central blood pressure (more accurate than an arm blood pressure measurement) the tension within both large and small arteries which may be a reflection of the clogging up of arteries by cholesterol and other blood components known as atheroma.

Disease with atheroma of the arteries is known as arteriosclerosis and is strongly associated with heart attacks and strokes. This painless, non-invasive technique is popular particularly in Europe but only used in research centres in the UK other than here at The Diagnostic Clinic where it is available to the public.

Haematron

The Haemotron is a computerised technique known as Three-Dimensional Cardiocartography. It is under research predominantly in Manchester. The test is similar to that of an ECG where an individual lies down and has leads applied to their chest. This specialised computer system measures various parameters of electrical impulse in the heart and major arteries and provides a three-dimensional colour picture of the heart and its function.

Information can be gleaned about the perfusion of blood into the heart muscle and therefore the oxygenation of the heart as well as various other parameters including central blood pressure, heart function and arterial state. At this time the Haemotron is only available in Manchester as London’s only computer system is unavailable.

Heart Vue

The Diagnostic Clinic is pleased to be part of worldwide research using this advanced ECG machine. The Swedish researchers have developed this ECG machine that requires electrodes on the wrists and ankles rather than the common chest leads making the test much simpler to perform.

Currently being compared to advanced cardiac testing such as exercise treadmill tests and invasive angiograms the early studies suggest this pioneering ECG may be able to predict heart disease well before current and conventional tests. Because of its research status at this time the HeartVue should not be used as a sole diagnostic test but can be used in conjunction with other heart and arterial testing (such as the Arteriograph and/or a resting ECG or an exercise ECG) .

Heart Rate Variability

The HRV analysis is a well established investigation into the function of the nervous system. The nervous system is divided into two parts. One we consciously control and the other is controlled by the subconscious brain - the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS).

The ANS is, for the purposes of simplification, further divided into the sympathetic (fight, flight and activating) and the parasympathetic (calming, controlling and pacifying).  The Heart Rate Variability test looks at the general tone of the ANS and then its response to stress.

We now have access to a far more illustrative 24-hour HRV analysis which our associated specialist, Dr Peter Gruenewald, would be happy to explain to you or we can send out information.
