Women's Health

Sexually transmitted disease has and will probably continue to be one of the biggest plights towards the health of both men and women ad infinitum.

Sensible precautions such as the use of condoms are highly recommended, but sexual health check-ups are also of vital importance, not only for the individual, but for society as a whole.

Our professionally performed and discretely reported Women’s Health Screens search for the more common sexually transmitted diseases including HIV, Syphilis and Gonorrhoea but also those that can create problems with fertility such as Chlamydia and potentially sinister Hepatitis B etc.

Herpes, whilst rarely a serious disease can be distressing both physically and mentally and is easily transmitted. This test can be added to our routine broad screen.

Breast examination and cervical smears can be included at your request if they have not been performed through your local GP or gynaecologist.

Some tests and screens can be arranged without seeing a doctor; however especially in patients with previous or existing medical conditions or uncertain symptoms, we recommend an initial consultation or short phone consultation* with one of our doctors first to determine which test/screen is most suitable for you.

* 10 – 15 minute phone consultation charged at a fixed rate

1. Female Hormone Screen

The Female Hormone Screen assesses levels of oestrogen and progesterone throughout a whole month and is ideal for women with menstrual irregularities, heavy periods, mood swings, pre-menstrual tension, infertility, fibroids and other female issues. By demonstrating the changing hormone levels throughout a whole cycle practitioners can judge the correct time to influence levels with natural options such as; vitamins, minerals and natural sources of oestrogen, progesterone and other bio-identical hormones.

The following hormones are assessed: oestradiol, progesterone, their ratio, and testosterone, melatonin, cortisol and DHEA. This screen also includes the stress hormone cortisol and the sleep hormone melatonin, because frequent symptoms, thought to be due to sex hormones, are actually related to other hormones.

The screen requires the collection of 11 saliva samples that are taken at regular intervals throughout the monthly cycle, with an additional four samples taken on one day at specified times. Detailed instructions as well as sample tubes and envelopes to send the samples directly to the laboratory are all provided with the kit. The kit can be collected at The Diagnostic Clinic or we can simply send it to your home.

The test results are returned to one of our Integrated Physicians who will provide a report and advise on possible treatment options.

Please be aware that there are certain requirements including avoiding tea, coffee or alcohol on the days of the tests. There might be a possibility of interference by the taking of the oral contraceptive pill/contraceptive implants/Mirena coil/HRT or bio-identical hormones in which case the choice of this screen should be discussed with one of our doctors prior to booking the screen.

For further information please contact our health screen advisers at +44 (0)207 009 4650.

2. Fertility Screen

For further information please contact our health screen advisers at +44 (0)207 009 4650

3. Female STD (Sexually transmitted Diseases) Screen

The Diagnostic Clinic offers tests for common and potentially serious sexually transmitted infections. Unprotected intercourse runs the risk of transmitting infections and we specifically look for Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Syphilis, Hepatitis B and C as well as HIV. Both male and female profile’s routinely look for Herpes as well.

Requirements are a urine sample, a blood test and a vaginal swab.  This can be done at The Diagnostic Clinic anytime Monday – Friday 9:00 – 17:00.

TDC offers 'walk-in' services, however to avoid waiting time during busy hours we recommend booking a 30 minute slot with one of our nurses in advance.

Good Practice requires that we explain in person the consequences of abnormal results and that a consent form is signed.  This takes approximately 5 minutes pre-testing.

Results will be reported by phone by a doctor. Depending on the results it may be necessary to ask a patient to come in for a follow up consultation lasting 30 minutes or alternatively we will ask them to attend their GP to whom we will then send the result. If your GP deals with the result then there is no further charge.

4. Menopause Screen

Menopause is the physiological cessation of menstruation which generally happens between the ages of 45 and 55.  It might be estimated to occur two years either side of when a woman’s mother stopped menstruating. Menopause, of course, is not a disease or an illness but many women struggle with symptoms like – mood swings, short temper, depression, anxiety, lowered libido and insomnia, and/or more physical symptoms – hot flushes, sweats, water retention, weight increase and others.  Loss of breast tissue, vaginal dryness, skin changes and osteoporosis are amongst the physical signs that can influence an individual’s wellbeing.

A hormonal study done through saliva in combination with a urinalysis for a compound known as DPD will tell us about hormones and risk of developing osteoporosis.

The results are assessed by an Integrated Physician who will prepare a full report and provide advice on naturopathic options based on the symptoms of the individual and the test results as well as assessing the need for the consideration of the prescription of hormone replacement therapy or an onward referral to a gynaecologist.

For this comprehensive test urine and saliva samples as well as a blood test (and the recommended but optional cervical smear) are required. The blood test and smear can be done at The Diagnostic Clinic anytime Monday – Friday 9:00am – 6:00pm. TDC's 'walk-in'  basis is not prefered, as our nurses need to prepare so it is necessary to book a 45 min slot in advance.

The kit for the urine and saliva test can be sent out prior to the screen to bring it to the clinic on the day of the blood test or can be collected on that day  to send it directly to the laboratory on completion.

Please be aware that there are certain requirements like fasting the morning of the blood test that should be discussed with one of our health screen advisors prior to booking the screen.

5. Preconception Screen
“How to ensure a healthy baby-screen”

The majority of pregnancies occur in women who have no investigations or screening whatsoever. Pregnancy is a demanding time on the mother’s body so assessing nutritional status and assessing toxicity levels can be reassuring or  can help avoiding  many unexplained infertility issues as well as difficulties  through pregnancy (excessive nausea, excessive aches and sleeplessness, etc.

The Diagnostic Clinic’s screening programme reviews baseline nutritional requirements for preconception including certain vitamin, mineral and amino acid levels and looks at antioxidant and free radical activity. This test also investigates possible toxicity levels which can interfere with the ease of conception and the smooth running of a pregnancy.

Unlike simply obtaining nutritional testing from an online or laboratory source The Diagnostic Clinic provides a summary by an Integrated Physician after analysis of your results.

All that is required is an early morning urine sample and a blood sample (and the recommended but optional cervical smear). The blood and smear test can be done at The Diagnostic Clinic anytime Monday – Thursday 9:00 – 17:00.

Coming on a walk-in basis is usually fine, however to avoid waiting time during busy hours we recommend booking a 30 minute slot with one of our nurses in advance. The kit for the urine test can be sent out prior to the screen, to bring it to the clinic on the day of the blood test or can be collected on that day to send it directly to the laboratory on completion.

Please be aware that there are certain requirements e.g. fasting over night, stopping certain supplements and non-essential medications of a few days prior to the test etc that should be discussed with one of our health screen advisors prior to booking the screen.

For further information please contact our health screen advisers at +44 (0)207 009 4650

6. Pregnancy Screen

This is a nutritional analysis and a health risk blood test to establish requirements for pregnancy.  The initial few months of a pregnancy sees an astonishing rate of growth and the diversification of a fertilised egg into many different body parts. This requires specific nutrients to be available.

The most well known problem is the deficiency of a B complex vitamin, folic acid, which can cause problems with the development of the nervous system known as Spina Bifida.

Other vitamins and minerals may cause other developmental problems and The Diagnostic Clinic’s Pregnancy Screen evaluates this risk as well.

Unlike simply obtaining nutritional testing from an online or laboratory source The Diagnostic Clinic provides a summary by an Integrated Physician after analysis of your results.

All that is required is an early morning urine sample and a blood sample. The blood test can be done at The Diagnostic Clinic anytime Monday – Thursday 9:00 – 17:00.

Coming on a walk-in basis is usually fine, however to avoid waiting time during busy hours we recommend booking a 15min slot with one of our nurses in advance.

The kit for the urine test can be sent out prior to the screen, to bring it to the clinic on the day of the blood test or can be collected on that day to send it directly to the laboratory on completion.

Please be aware that there are certain requirements e.g. fasting over night, stopping certain supplements and non-essential medications for four days prior to the test etc that should be discussed with one of our health screen advisors prior to booking the screen.

For further information please contact our health screen advisers at +44 (0)207 009 4650.

7. Osteoporosis Screen

Osteoporosis is the medical term for bones that are demineralising (predominantly losing calcium but also losing other minerals) thereby increasing the risk of fracture.  A milder loss of bone that does not necessarily increase fracture risk is termed osteopenia.

Diagnosis is often made, unfortunately, after a fall leads to a fracture and x-rays indicate that the bone is thin.  Regular X-rays are not, however, the best way to look at bone density.  The conventional and best method is using a specialised low-dose x-ray known as the DEXA Scan.

The Osteoporosis Screen combines the DEXA scan with a urine tests known as DPD Urinalysis which is based on evidence that measuring the rate of bone ‘turn-over’ gives a better indication of risk of fracture. (Turn over means the speed at which bone is broken down to provide calcium to the blood stream and the speed with which bone re-builds).

This is combined with a mineral profile as well as a Vitamin D test and a  blood analysis known as OsteoGenomics that can indicate who might be at genetic risk of osteoporosis and what dietetic, environmental and life-style changes might benefit each individual.

The OsteoGenomic test tells us how nutrition, life-style and exercise might influence the risk for osteoporosis. Therefore results need to be interpreted by a doctor in light of the individual patient and their medical and family history.

All that is required is an early morning urine sample and a blood sample. The blood test can be done at The Diagnostic Clinic anytime Monday – Friday 9:00 – 17:00.

Coming on a walk-in basis is usually fine, however to avoid waiting time during busy hours we recommend booking a free 15min slot with one of our nurses in advance.

The kit for the urine test can be sent out prior to the screen, to bring it to the clinic on the day of the blood test or can be collected on that day to send it directly to the laboratory on completion.
