General Health
Our health and ability to perform at an optimum level, physically or mentally, is dependent on so many factors. Health is not just about an absence of disease but about achieving the best health possible.
|
The Diagnostic Clinic studies nutritional status, metabolic processes, our ability to detoxify and the presence of toxins, neurohormonal balance and therefore stress levels, cellular energy production and bowel health in our most extensive of screens for general health.
Some tests and screens can be arranged without seeing a doctor; however especially in patients with previous or existing medical conditions or uncertain symptoms, we recommend an initial consultation or short phone consultation* with one of our doctors first to determine which test/screen is most suitable for you.
* 10 – 15 minute phone consultation charged at a fixed rate

Smoker Risk Analysis Screen
Everybody seems to know someone or knows someone who knows someone who smoked 40-a-day and lived until they were 90!! They all cross their fingers that they will fall into the same lucky group.
The reason that some people may be able to smoke with apparent impunity (and it is only the minority who will not struggle with smoking related disease if they continue the habit) is in part due to lifestyle and nutritional factors that may offer some protection and to lesser degree genetics.
People assume that lung cancer is the main problem with smoking but in fact only ten percent of smokers will develop a cancer. The biggest problem is arterial disease and damage to lung tissue known as emphysema.
This is why our screen combines a lung function test with possibly the most scientifically established pioneering non-invasive test for arterial health and predictor of heart and stroke health risk, known as the Arteriograph.
The ability to detoxify and the levels of antioxidants and other protective components (predominantly the phenolic compounds found in plants) can give us information about an individual’s risk of severely damaging their health with the habit. The screen measures levels of inflammation through a test known as HS-CRP, levels of carbon monoxide as well as toxic metals (found in abundance in cigarettes) and looks at the protective antioxidant activity.
This assessment lasts approximately 50 minutes during which a specifically assigned nurse will guide the patient through a variety of tests including lung function and a urine and blood test.
The screen can be booked Monday – Thursday 9:00 – 12:00 by calling reception on +44 020 7009 4650.
Please be aware that there are certain requirements including fasting 12 hours prior and avoiding certain medications prior to the screen which should be discussed with one of our health screen advisors prior to booking the screen.
The results will be interpreted by one of our doctors in conjunction with the information given by the patient in our comprehensive medical history and lifestyle questionnaire. The final health report will be sent to the patient within 10 working days.

Stress Screen - How is stress affecting you?
Stress can be divided into mind and body. We all have life pressures which influence the production of adrenaline, dopamine and other stress hormones and our body counteracts these so-called catecholamines by the production of cortisol, serotonin and others.
Physical stress can be caused by the influx of toxins such as cigarettes, alcohol and pollution, but also from over-exercising, a lack of sleep or dealing with disease and ill-health.
The Diagnostic Clinic’s Neurostress Profile measures the major stress hormones and gives a clear indication of how an individual may be dealing with stress, whether they are heading towards a “breakdown” or have actually reached a state of “burn-out/adrenal fatigue”.
Unlike simply obtaining nutritional testing from an online or laboratory source The Diagnostic Clinic provides a summary by an Integrated Physician after analysis of your results.
For this test urine and saliva samples have to be collected over the course of one day. Detailed instructions as well as sample tubes and envelopes to send the samples directly to the laboratory are all provided with the kit. The kit can be collected at The Diagnostic Clinic or we can simply post it. The test results are returned to one of our Integrated Physicians who will provide a report and advice on possible treatment options.
This can be combined with a specialised electrical measurement of the heart known as the Heart Rate Variability test (HRV). Either of these tests can give clues to a practitioner on how best an individual might change their lifestyle or require treatment. It is preferable to have both tests which would require attendance at The Diagnostic Clinic for the HRV.
The results will then lead to a full report by one of our Integrated Physicians explaining the findings and offering advice on suitable action plans.

Screen for Depression
Depression can be caused by external events (known as reactive or exogenous depression) or by an inability of the nervous system to produce “happy juice” (such as serotonin) or by an excess of depressive chemicals (endogenous).
Many things influence endogenous depression such as nutrient deficiencies, hormonal imbalances and persistent or recurrent low blood sugar and all of these possibilities have to be explored.
To that end The Diagnostic Clinic strongly recommends an initial appointment with one of our counsellors to establish underlying causes, differentiate between reactive and endogenous depression and establish whether talking therapy such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy will suffice over and above interventional or drug therapies.
The Diagnostic Clinic’s offers a Neurostress Profile which measures the levels of the neurohormones (the chemicals which influence our moods and are made by the brain) which include measurements of adrenaline and noradrenaline, dopamine, serotonin and cortisol amongst others and can give the physician a clear insight into whether imbalances are part of the depression.

This can be combined with an analysis of brainwave function and brain blood flow using specialised equipment known as the Brain Scan and Brain Hemoencephalography.
This requires an appointment with Dr Lesley Parkinson, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and specialist in Neuro-Psychophysiology.
Whichever avenue of testing you follow one of our Integrated Physicians will comment on the findings and provide advice on the best therapeutic approach primarily from a non-drug point of view but with acknowledgement to the possible need of such therapy.
