Environmental Medicine

There is a lot of information available about “detoxification”.

It is a broad term not particularly respected by conventional medicine but used a lot by Complementary and Alternative medical practitioners.

We have to remember, however, that one man’s meat is another man’s poison.

Some tests and screens can be arranged without seeing a doctor; however especially in patients with previous or existing medical conditions or uncertain symptoms, we recommend an initial consultation or short phone consultation* with one of our doctors first to determine which test/screen is most suitable for you.

For further information please contact +44 (0) 207 009 4650.
* 10 – 15 minute phone consultation charged at a fixed rate

1. The "Am I Toxic" Screen

Environmental factors such as contact with toxins like air pollution, pesticides or chemicals are coming more and more into focus of the medical profession. However, it is still difficult to determine whether someone’s health is actually affected by a toxin or not.

This simple screen can be exceptionally informative because if a body is actually dealing with a toxin a blood marker known as Glutathione S-transferase (GST) will frequently rise.

It is a compound produced predominantly in the liver (although also by other tissues) and may elevate in the presence of a toxin.
If GST is not raised then there is only a low risk of having a toxin in the system. If it is raised then we have to consider whether an individual is generally not detoxifying well and/or what the toxin is.

All that is required is a small blood sample.
This can be done at The Diagnostic Clinic anytime Monday – Thursday 9:00 – 17:00.

Coming on a walk-in basis is usually fine, however to avoid waiting time during busy hours we recommend booking a 15 minute slot with one of our nurses in advance by ringing reception on +44 (0)207 009 4650.

There are no specific requirements e.g. fasting for this test.

3. Toxic Metals Screen

As we are seeing more definitive proof that mercury and aluminium may be relevant to neurological diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis and dementia/Alzheimer’s the importance of establishing metal toxicity is increasing.

The doctors at The Diagnostic Clinic have reviewed information that appears not only on the web but also in scientific research papers and have concerns about some of the tests recommended.  Hair analysis, for example, has only a limited amount of scientific testimony and metals may well be present intra-cellular or bound to tissues and therefore not be eliminated in the hair.

Measuring toxic metals therefore, in the blood or urine only may miss the presence of metals for exactly the same reasons.

The Diagnostic Clinic therefore combines urine and blood tests with a unique White Blood Cell metal sensitivity test.  White blood cells that come into contact with metal in the body become sensitised and specialised laboratory testing can identify such sensitivity thereby acting as a more accurate indication of the presence of a toxic metal that may be ‘hidden’ in cells.

The Diagnostic Clinics Integrated Physicians will obtain the results and write a report and if necessary discuss the different levels of chelation (the binding and removal of metals from the system) using both oral and intravenous approaches.  A consultation with an Integrated Physician if your test results are positive is highly recommended.

4. Toxicity & Detoxification Screen

The Diagnostic Clinic’s Toxicity and Detoxification Screen combines the “Am I toxic”- Screen with the Toxic Metal Screen plus further incorporating further tests for pesticides and related chemicals in the body and an analysis of the main pathways of detoxification.

These are called Phase I and Phase II. Phase I is performed by enzyme pathways in the liver that change a toxic substance into a less toxic one that is easier for the body to excrete.

Phase II detoxification, also occurring in the liver, binds substances such as Cysteine, Glycine or a sulphur molecule to the now altered toxin making it available for excretion, usually in the bile passed into the gut for elimination.

The Diagnostic Clinic Integrated Physicians will obtain the results and write a report and if necessary discuss the different methods of detoxification enhancement using both oral and intravenous approaches. The report will also give advice on suitable lifestyle and therapeutic options to encourage detoxification. A consultation with an Integrated Physician if your test results are positive is highly recommended.

The screen comprises of a blood test and a test kit for urine and saliva samples. The blood test can be done at The Diagnostic Clinic anytime Monday – Thursday 9:00 – 17:00.

Coming on a walk-in basis is usually fine, however to avoid waiting time during busy hours we recommend booking a 15 minute slot with one of our nurses in advance by ringing reception on +44 (0)207 009 4650

The kits for the urine and saliva test can be sent to the patient prior to the blood test, for them to bring to the clinic or we can give them the kit on the day of the screen to send it directly to the laboratory on completion.

Please be aware that there are specific requirements including avoiding caffeine, chocolate etc and stopping certain supplements and non-essential medications for a few days prior to this test. It is also necessary to avoid fruit on the day of the saliva test. These issues should be discussed with one of our health screen advisors prior to booking a screen.
